Relativistic Dynamics

چکیده
The Newtonian and relativistic relationships between the velocity, momentum and energy of an electron traveling at relativistic speeds are compared. Plots of these values are obtained using an electromagnet, velocity selector and solid-state detector. Values of the electron charge and electron rest energy are calculated at e = 1.44 ± .02 × 10−19 C and mec = 514 ± 6 keV, respectively. The possibility of systematic error in the electromagnet is discussed.

We show that relativistic dynamics can be approached without using conservation laws (conservation of momentum, of energy and of the centre of mass). Our approach avoids collisions that are not easy to teach without mnemonic aids.
